Numbers and Letters Transparency

Can anybody shed some light on the great art of letter and number making? I've made numerous attempts in both Photoshop 6 and Fireworks 4 but, still can't get the transparency to work correctly.

I've attatched a .zip file with the latest example of my problem.

If anybody is skilled at this and could lend a hand I'd appreciated it immensely

in photo shop 6 do the foloowing:
1.Goto image/mode, then click on inedxed color. Then make it "Local Adaptive. 256 colors. and click on the transparency box so there is a check mark in it. Then click "ok".
2. Then goto image/mode and put it back to RGB color.
3. Then use the eraser tool and make whatever you want transparent. You will know it is transparent because there will be white and grey boxes.
4. When you are done and you have more than one layer goto layer/merge visible.
5. Repeat step 1 and save. You are done! And it will be transparent ingame!

Thanks for getting me in the ballpark Earl! That info helped a lot. I did have to tweak the steps a little bit because it didn't work exactly like you posted. Still, it would have taken me weeks of tinkering around without your help.

I decided to post everything I learned about number making on my site:
