your db.viv is extremely old, so that might be the reason why it is not working.
post a pic of the roster zip package that includes all the roster files and make sure it has the modified date showing

Hey, im new to all of these updates and im trying to update my roster for nhl 08. I dont know if im completely missing something but where do you get the exhibition.exh and exhibition.exha and db.viv files? thanks

Well I did EXACTLY as described and I still have only the original rosters.
1.All the old db.viv files have been overwritten.
2. In the My Documents/DB section I extracted the db.viv file
3. I copied exhibition.exh and exhibition.exha.tdb to My Documents\NHL09
4. I copied BHImport08.bat to C:\Program Files (x86)\EA SPORTS\NHL 09
5. I copied genbhnhl, gfxpak and ImpBIG to my NHL09 main folder C:\Program Files (x86)\EA SPORTS\NHL 09
6. I ran BHImport08.bat and it APPEARED to install everything correctly. At least, that's what the message said after it got done running.
But when I started up the game and checked the rosters NOTHING had changed. I have NO idea where the game is finding the old rosters from, as they have all been overwritten. The game still shows Chris Chelios playing for Detroit and he hasn't played for them since October of 2009. And he just signed another contract with the Chicago Wolves through 2010. Is that change not in the Version 17 or 18 rosters?
Is there something specific I should look for to prove that this roster installed? A specific player being on a specific team?
My OS is Windows XP Pro 64 bit if that makes a diffference. Thanks for all your efforts and help.

No you didn't
db.viv goes in the C:\Program Files\EA Sports(x86)\NHL09\db folder
It does not go into the My Documents folder or in any variation of it.
