It looked like Kostopoulos just went in hard to me and nothing malicious about it. Everyone knows that hockey is a high risk sport and things happen whether it be intentional or not, it's just the nature of the game. I'm sure there are a lot of people on this site like myself that have played this game in real life either at a lower or higher level knows that stuff like this just happens and it's unfortunate, but to me the only thing that would make this a dirty hit is if the intentions of Kostopoulos was to intentionally hurt someone by hitting from behind and only he knows, other than that this sort of thing just happens whether or not we want to analyze it forever or not, this stuff is just part of the game. Also you need to give Van Ryn credit, he knew Kostopoulos was coming in hard behind him and still played his position selflessly and went right for the puck.

I would agree, I don't think it was malicious and done with the intention of hurting someone. The intent was to make a big clean hit, but when the player has his back to you it is very clear that you don’t need to follow through with the hit. He went full force with the hit and should pay the price for doing that and not letting up.

Well Kostopoulos got three games. The NHL did not like the hit.

The hit was as much Van Ryn's fault as Kostopolous fault.

I played defence for 11 years in minor hockey. I was always taught when your skating back to get a puck in your own zone to skate in on an angle not straight into the boards. Van Ryn starts on an angle but then striaght into the boards. But Kostopolous could have held up or just riding him into the boards.

But you look at Kostopolous right after the hit he knows what he did. And was waiting for someone to come in.

Looks kind of like Van Ryn was turning to his left and at the last milli-second turned his back to the hit and thats Van Ryn's fault. Kostopoulus actually made his first contact with the left side of Van Ryn's back that made it in real time look like a straight hit in the back. In real time you don't see it but if you slow down the replay the hit actually turns Van Ryn face first into the boards because he turned away from the hit. Most people are taught to finish their checks, but maybe their is a grey area where that concept of teaching is concerned but this stuff happens and I personally hate to see it happen to Van Ryn because I've been a Van Ryn fan ever since he wore the Maze and Blue for the Wolverines and now even more because I'm a Leafs fan too, so I should be defending Van Ryn but I really don't think it was a flagrant hit. It's like driving down the highway at 80 MPH and trying to get on to a ramp that is 100ft in front of you, humans can't adjust that quick and when they try to bad things happen. I've seen a college athlete try to let up in that area before on a similar play and he hurt himself doing it and now will live the rest of his life in a damn wheel chair.
