Problems with Controller / Pulling Goalie
Anyone else having problems with pulling the goalie by accident? Hard to believe that while on defense, the button that switches players is also mapped to pulling the goalie if held too long. There has to be some way to be able to switch players on defense and not worry about pulling the goalie by accident. Any info would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I'm having the issue with the PC version. I'm using a Saitek P880 dual analog controller. I must be missing something because I've never seen this before. In the controller config section, under defense, they have the switch player/pull goalie ( hold down) as the same button. This can't be changed. When I play a game, when switching to the closest player, every once in a while it must see that I'm holding it down too long and the goalie gets pulled. I hope there is something to do about this.

I use the P880 on my laptop and I have no problems.
I use the Logitech Dual Action regedit hack
For the controller,
open up regedit. navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
MediaProperties
PrivateProperties
Joystick
OEM
go to the last VID folder, change the OEM name of your gamepad to one of the supported ones.
You can do this with any gamepad, but not all of them will work correctly when renamed as another one.
Use Logitech Dual Action

That's just how it's mapped - and I don't think that can be changed.. interestingly - I had this problem in NHL 07 last year - and I believe I saw not one single thread about it. I could never figure out how I was pulling the goalie while I was playing - but I constantly was. I had to learn to keep a keen eye on it so I could deactivate the goalie before a goal was scored on me.
Once or twice this has happened in NHL 08 so far. I didn't even realize it's the 'switches players' button. Now I know..

Thanks to everyone responding. DSgamby, I will give it a shot and see what happens. Brad26, this is the first time I've ever seen EA use one button to do two functions. I've played every version of NHL for PC and never noticed this. I know last year for me it never happened. I would have noticed in 07 if there were two functions mapped to the same button.
It wouldn't matter much if it was a button that wasn't used much, but switching players on defense, that button is used more than any. To have it mapped so that if you hold it for a smidge too long you are pulling the goalie, that's crazy. Thanks again for the responds, much appreciated.

I tried your suggestion DSgamby, but still no go. There isn't a way to change that button because it has two funcions mapped to it in the game. Why map the "pull goalie" button with the switch players on defense button? If there was a way to play defense without switching players, I would. If anyone is using a controller that doesn't have the "switch players" button and "pull goalie" mapped to the same button let me know.

It doesn't say Pull goalie in my game. It says Hold For Goalie, which is control the goalie and it was in last year.
This is in both the Hybrid and Classic Controls

Mine says "hold" for goalie as well. If it was in 07, I never noticed it. I don't feel like re-installing last years version to see how the controller config was setup, but I'm sure it's different this year. I found a few posts on EA's NHL 08 forum that have the same issues. Here is one example:

I have a saitek p3000 (was hell in nhl06) but now it's just weird. Without hitting any buttons and just using the analog sticks, it'll pull my goalie or exit out like I hit esc on the keyboard. The messed up thing is that when it pulls my goalie, it won't show it when I hit esc. It will usually say pull goalie instead of return goalie or whatever. I tried all of my buttons to see if I could pull him, and none do, it's just a certain way I move the sticks simultaneously. Oh, and some of guys won't shoot with the skill stick. They just constantly deke... so, um, what's up with that? I made myself of course, and the poor guy CAN'T shoot! That's a shame, because I'm FANTASTIC!
[edit]
I haven't even bothered trying to change the controls because the numbers on my controller don't match what the game shows as far button number, etc...
I also tried to duplicate pulling the goalie by holding the button down but it doesn't happen. I've tried all button combos. But out of nowhere I hear "they're pulling the goalie" , or sometimes no audio about this at all, just notice the goalie is gone. Oh well, either wait for a patch, or bring it back.

Hey guys, I appreciate all the help, just found this site and it's amazing! Staying on topic, this problem is not just with the Saitek controllers, I am having it with the wireless 360 controller....my goalie gets pulled constantly and I can't find a fix, it renders the game unplayable. Here's my issue, I found driver files that are supposed to fix the association of clicking the left stick with any function, but b/c I am using the wireless controller I can't figure out how to manually install the driver file/manually update the driver. In Device manager, the Wireless Controller itself is not listed, only the Wireless Reciever and that is a totally different driver. Please tell me there is a fix for this, I really hope I don't have to wait around on the slobs in EA that lazily port the PS2 game over to the PC to come up with a patch that fizxes this issue. Thanks in advance !

Is this the Windows 360 controller or the 360 controller?

I didn't think there was a difference. It is a wireless 360 controller used with the wireless reciever for the PC, running Vista 32 bit if that matters

Thank you for the post, but that's not the problem. My controller works fine, it just benches my goalie at random times.....seems to be accidentally clicking the left stick. I've seen other fixes for this, but nothing works with mine, the only definitive fix was for a saitek gamepad, nothing for a wireless 360 one. All the other controls wrok great.

WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW! I'm sorry, I have to point out my own stupidity to prove a point. I just NOW realized that this topic is in the 'NHL 08' forum thread. I however have the SAME CONTROLLER ISSUE with EA's "new" NHL 09, which was why I posted previously in this thread. Does this not speak to the fact that EA has resolved itself to just recycling old code and dumping out the same game with a new cover on the PC, and does not really care about the PC gamer? I have nothing at all against consoles, but I hate to see PC gamers get dumped on and watch NG console buyers get the good games while I get punished for playing on PC. So not only did EA not patch this problem for NHL 08, they also didn't fix it for NHL 09, and I would imagine that I shouldn't hold my breath for a patch fix anytime soon, correct? Am I alone in being angry that I have to troll forums and look for hacks just to get my game to work? Sorry for the negative slant, but NHL 09 has left a severely bitter taste in my mouth so far.

2k still hasn't fixed their freezing in NHL for what 6 years now and people want it on the PC and it happens on all consoles.
I use the recommended controller and I have no problems

Ok, I can see that, but why should I have to buy a different controller for every game, when a simple change in code would allow me to change the functions of the buttons on my controller? Letting us customize the controls to disable the function of clicking the analog stick would alleviate the problem. Developers should not be able to force me to buy a specific controller, isn't that the whole argument for keeping the sys reqs low? To provide a gaming experience for the broadest pssible audience? Making me buy a new controller doubles the price of the game.

You think NHL is the only game that does not allow full customizable controls?
You don't have buy a different controller for every game, just the Logitech Dual Action Controller is it is the recommended for all of the NHL games, at least since 2004.
The Logitech Dual Action Controller costs 20 bucks and I have used it for a few years now. It has been the recommended controller for NHL for at least 2004.
Keeping the sys reqs low does not include controllers, it only includes your PC specs which your controller is not part of. If you want to keep the sys reqs low and include the controller as the sys reqs, then use the keyboard to play, hence you would spend no money on the controller for the game.

I do the vast majority of my gaming on the PC, and I have been with the NHL franchise from the start. I remember being able to drop in my own MP3's and download official roster updates, and all of EA's support for the PC platform has gone the way of the do do. I'm not trying to flame you, and I am a keyboard and mouse purist for FPS games, but for a sports game? No way, a gamepad feels more natural. I don't buy controllers for one game, I have been very pleased since the windows 360 pad came out, and it works great. I game on a laptop at work, and I refuse to carry 2 or more gamepads in my bag to accomodate what I might be playing that night. I don't think it is asking too much for EA to support one of the longest running PC franchises. DS, I'm not directing any of this rant at you, it's frustration with EA b/c I've watch a franchise I really enjoy turn to a steaming pileof bovine excrement over years past, and I'm not coolwith it. I think you and I can agree that this controller issue, and the addition of new animations, color commentary, etc. are all minor things no? That is what bothers me, the game completely lacks polish
and hugely disappoints when they can't address these minor touches, and all I see are raving reviews for the
360/PS3 versions. I'm sure those versions have their faults, don't get me wrong, but it is obvious that that is where EA chooses to focus their attention while they lazily cut and paste a new PC version, dump it on shelves late, and then whine that their sales are down. It stinks in my opinion.
