Old questions about modding NHL 2004

Here are some snags I had run into when my NHL 2004 modding ended up killing the game. Perhaps their answers will help me in the future, if anyone knows.

After a certain amount of fe modding (unpak'd image replacement), I was unable to play games. All of the gui before loading the game engine worked fine, select your teams to play, change lines, make trades, etc, but once you choose to play the game, it would sit at the screen with the arena shot and that spinning wheel. I used filemon (from System Internals) to determine that the game would sit there forever trying to open/load/read common.viv. I searched both CDs (as well as google) for a solution or a replacement common.viv but found none. If the common.viv gets corrupted, what is there to do? Also to note that gfxpak couldn't open it either.

I also had a problem with fe modding when I tried replacing face graphics (the large size). I had picked a player (Tony Granato), found his pic (from the master list) and replaced it with a pic of Jeff Hoggan (from TSN.ca, resized correctly). After I would go to view rosters or lines, Tony Granato's face image was the standard "blank" meaning he had no picture. Why did this happen?

You should be able to find the original common.viv file on the 2004 disc. Worst case, just install the game fresh in a new (renamed) directory and grab it from there.

Regarding the in-game photos, how did you insert it? It needs to be inserted into the existing .fsh file for the player as a .png with a transparent border on the left and right sides.
