7-2
Canucks Steamroll Over Flames 7-2 in Season Opener
When it was all said and done, the Vancouver Canucks had fired the puck 7 times
into their opponent's net.
The Calgary Flames team just could not keep up with the speedy second line of the
Vancouver Canucks. The second line combined for a total of 3 goals, 3 assists, 6 points, and
ended up +6.
"We just didn't skate very well," commented Flames captain Jarome Iginla. "They saw
openings, blitzed past us, and kept firing good chances at Kipper." Iginla was one of the
players that was on the disappointing first line that just managed a total of 6 shots on net.
The Flames starting goalie, Miikka Kiprusoff, was pulled after allowing 7 goals on
29 shots. His replacement, Curtis McElhinney, stopped all 7 shots that were shot at him.
"It wasn't Kipper's fault. We just kept allowing odd man rushes and even
breakaways," remarked Flames defenseman Jay Bouwmeester. "We can't let this happen if we are
going to go for the Stanley Cup."
Canucks coach Alain Vigneault was impressed with his secondary scoring. "It wasn't just
our second line. Our third and fourth lines were also chipping in. But I believe that our
first line needs to work a bit harder if we are going to become successful."
Star netminder Roberto Luongo also had a solid outing, posting 26 saves on 28 shots.

Three Stars:
1st Star - Pavol Demitra (2G, 1A)
2nd Star - Ryan Kesler (1G, 2A)

Luongo Shuts Out Avalanche
Roberto Luongo was named 2nd Star as he posted 19 saves for the win.
The Canucks got into some early penalty trouble, but were able to kill all four penalties,
including back-to-back 5 on 3 chances for the Avalanche. Luongo was solid in net, as 13 of the
19 shots were triggered on odd-man rushes.
"I just tried the keep the puck out of the net. I knew my D-men were going to be there for
the rebound and I knew that they could hit. That made the odd-man rushes easier," said
Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo.
On the other end of the ice, Avalanche goalie Peter Budaj saved 26 shots while allowing 4 goals.
The Canucks 2nd line kept with their hot streak, combining for two of the four goals.

Three Stars:
1st Star - Ryan Kesler (2G, 0A)
2nd Star - Roberto Luongo (19 Saves)
3rd Star - Henrik Sedin (1G, 0A)
Goals:
1st Period
2:56 Kesler (Demitra, Luongo)
2nd Period
7:44 Bernier (Samuelsson, Edler)
3rd Period
4:14 Kesler (Bieksa)
4:41 H. Sedin (D. Sedin, Salo)

Hopefully. It's 1-1 right now and it would be good if we could get this game...
Won't be posting any updates until Thursday or later, please tell me if there's anything you want me to work on or you know a program that can organize this stuff.
Thanks!

Great Play By Mason Keeps Columbus In Game
After just 19 seconds from a goal by Rick Rypien late in the third period, Columbus finally gave a push back. Brassard roofed a shot right over Luongo's right shoulder to ruin his shut-out bid and give some life to the Blue Jackets.
The play started with a face-off win for Columbus. After a defensive lapse by Shane O'Brien, Brassard found himself with some room and roofed it right over Luongo. This was the start of the push by the Blue Jackets, who managed to hit the post 4 times in the third period after that goal.
"Brassard just ripped that shot over my shoulder," said Luongo, who had 17 saves on the night, "And right after that, I guess both the defense and I kind of lost the momentum." They indeed did, with the Blue Jackets just missing a "W" in this matchup if the shots were just a few millimeters better.
Early in the game, Mason was peppered with shots and odd man rushes as the Columbus defense looked asleep. Mason however, only allowed one goal in the first period and kept his team in the match-up.However, two of the goals scored on him during this game were both from bad angles, with one shot careening off both of his pads, his skate, and in.

Three Stars:
1st Star - Mason Raymond (1G, 0A)
2nd Star - Henrik Sedin (1G, 0A)
3rd Star - Rick Rypien (1G, 0A)
Goals:
1st Period
2:09 Henrik Sedin (Burrows, Mitchell)
2nd Period
-No Scoring-
3rd Period
6:56 Raymond (Demitra, Luongo)
14:00 Rypien (Ehrhoff)
14:19 Brassard (Russell)

Clutch Goal By Burrows Saves Canucks' Game
The Montreal bench went silent with 23 seconds left on the clock. The red light was flashing, the crowd was cheering and the Canucks were celebrating.
Alexandre Burrows had just scored top shelf on Montreal goaltender Carey Price after a feed from Ryan Kesler at the top of the right circle. The Canucks had gone on the powerplay just seconds earlier. "It feels great to score the winning goal, but we also have to check on our defense. It let us down tonight," criticized Burrows.
And that he was right about. After jumping to a quick two goal lead in the first, the Canucks saw their lead disappear time and time again as the Canadiens managed to score three goals in the second and four goals in the third. With just 23 seconds left, Alexandre Burrows sealed the win for his team.
"It looks like the chemistry of our team isn't just quite right yet. We're going to have to revise our lines and make a few tweaks." said Canucks coach Alain Vigneault. And this might be great news for young players in the Canucks' farm team, the Manitoba Moose.
