DT - NHL Board Pack (Preview)

Hey all,

I'm not usually one to preview anything, but I just thought I'd let everyone know something's being done...

Before I delve into all of the arenas, I figured I'd redo the board model so that we could have more accurate boards again this year. Credits to Drezz and others for the initial idea. I've done the model completely from scratch. Now, we have two small ads at the goal lines (NHL.com, CBC, TSN, VS., etc., etc.), better(ish) stretching, and the ads will overlap on the doors for a little more "authenticity". Naturally, I've redone the ice reflections to match as well.

Below are a couple of mini-previews (Toronto & Calgary). The plan is to release a full NHL pack in as short an amount of time as possible.

I will include the model as well as a template for the finished product with the first release. Ideas and suggestions are always welcome, just don't be bitter if I do it my own way anyway!

Cheers,
-DT

YES I LOVE YOU

Every day I feel the weight of the work load getting less and less. Things like this are the reason why. I'm glad someone stepped up and took what crap I started with and made it 100X better.

If you want my PSD source file for the board ads just holla. They may give you a bit of an idea for those ads that are hard to recognize from pics or recaps.

I suppose it is impossible to create those LED rotating board ads some arenas have.

Well, its certainly not possible to re-create the scrolling aspect of the simple scrolling ad boards (ex. Vancouver), or the changing LED boards (ex. Ottawa) but that doesn't mean its impossible to create a static texture in its place. However, with the 2-D nature of the boards I really doubt it would add much to the overall "look" of everything. I tried last year with Vancouver's boards, but I don't think it looked any better than had I just used the regular ads instead.

Good suggestion though, if anyone has other ideas, please keep 'em coming.

Cheers,
-DT

They had a model in 2001 that had a scrolling ad, similar to the setup they currently have for the roof ads - I think it looks shabby. To be honest, its a bit of a waste, when you can just create a simulated one in 2d.

I would think that the hard part would be to make it glow.

Quick Update: 17 teams are completed. I'm averaging about 2 per day right now. Its so nice when 2+ teams have some of the same board ads or use the same ads more than once (thank you Los Angeles). The ads are all identical to their real-life counterparts with very few corners cut...what can I say, I'm a slight perfectionist.

You can all expect the completed pack by the first week of November at the VERY latest.

Cheers,
-DT

Ugh...creating 540 different ads for each and every team takes some time. There are precious few teams that have similar ads unless they happen to be in the same part of the continent, and even then it certainly isn't many. Finding clear pics of so many random ads can be a tedious and lengthy process (FYI - don't drink and drive in Tennessee, "You Booze, You Lose") !! Not to mention, going through grainy game highlights isn't an easy (or remotely fun) task either.

I will say this, I think it'll be worth the wait, but that's just my opinion. The SE division and New Jersey remain to be completed plus a couple fixes to two or three other clubs. November 7th remains my deadline day, but if I miss it... um, meh?

Cheers,
-DT
